Art Buttons You Can Make: from Basic to Nearly Over the Top

Art buttons are a way to finish my knitwear in the way I picture them in my mind. It isn’t always clear exactly what I want, so it is a process of experimentation to get to the final product.

A variation of a dorset button
This is a variation on a traditional Dorset button (see right). The center is a series of bullions. Lace weight yarn.

An almost standard Dorset button. I started making these 20 years ago, but I lack the patience to make more than one!
Art button is a collage of small beads of varying colors and sizes and French knots in the taupe/peach alpaca yarn used in my Tuscany capelette
This is the first “stream-of-consciousness” button I made. It is 2″ / 5.1 cm of beads matching those used in Tuscany Capelette and a bunch of French knots.
These are collage pieces, which I adore. Round, lime colored buttons with a sparkle that I picked up from the clearance bin, a dyed shell button from another project, and a large square button purchased for some unknown purpose, probably also a clearance item.

I got so much satisfaction from making this one! It is the perfect finish to a red, white, and black Maiori cowl.

I love making these art buttons. I used bits of leftover yarn that matches a bulky version of Maiori, and Cabone rings and buckle parts, plus mother of pearl sequins, and a pick I hijacked from a restaurant.
