We need a diversion from all the news. Whatever your feelings might be, this is a lot to have coming at you all at once. I want to be on top of all that is happening, but at the same time, well I need a diversion to keep my sanity. I am quite happy I have my knitting, but what about this:
A Diversion: Love Symbol #2 from Pantone®
On August 14, 2017 The Prince Estate and Pantone Color Institute™ announced the creation of a color to honor Prince. Inspired by the purple Yamaha piano Prince had custom made for his upcoming tour prior to his death. Remember when we needed a diversion from that? When losing a popular music icon was almost too much to get our heads around?
Oh, how things change!
One of our favorite diversions on Friday evenings is watching videos on YouTube. We favor comedy and music. One night we watched this video of the George Harrison tribute at the 2004 Hall of Fame inductions. I loved how happy Dani Harrison seemed to be, and I love some good guitar, but as one of the comments says, Prince shredded. As fascinating as Prince is to watch, I also enjoyed seeing the reactions of the other guitarists. Prince comes on at about 3:29. Watch the end. I just rewatched it, with no volume. The man knew how to hold the stage. His sartorial choices are always enjoyable too.
A Diversion: Going Back to Where I Started
Did I mention this before? I think I’ve said something about making a draft pattern for jeans for Mitch, but I haven’t said anything about the Stitching I’m planning. Last year when we on vacation I did some embroidery. I wish I was better at it, but I am not a skilled hand stitcher. But I kind of like to do it and it was a pleasant diversion from knitting.
I have a tee shirt that I bought about 15 years ago. It has gone from being treasured because it was so cool, to just my favorite tee, to still my favorite tee, but it is definitely on its last legs. So I bought some organic cotton jersey and I’m going to copy the tee, then take a piece of fabric that I have owned since 1984 (and it wasn’t new then) and imitate the panel on the front of the favorite tee. I have some yarn from Mondo Fil (courtesy of International Yarn Distributors) to use for the thread embellishments I have planned.
A couple of friends and I are getting together on the 31st for a Stitching Night. I think I’ll just work on the panel with them. It will be another diversion from my knitting, which is never non-work related.
A Diversion: OMG Comedy is So Good Right Now!
Jon Stewart and The Daily Show got me through George W. Bush, for which Mitch and I are grateful. I love Trevor Noah, and I laugh out loud a lot during each episode (he’s on break right now!). We watch Full Frontal, Last Week Tonight, and another Friday favorite is Seth Myers, A Closer Look. We’ve actually had to watch it more frequently lately.
We miss Larry Wilmore on The Nightly Show, but watch Insecure (he is a co-creator). We learned about Hood Adjacent with James Davis on the Daily Show recently. Playing House brings Keegan Michael-Key (remember him as Obama’s Anger Translator?). Recenly we caught on to Baroness von Sketch Show. Those should provide some diversion for you.
A Diversion: Knitting
I’ve got all my swatching projects, but this weekend I’m taking a pattern from Holli Yeoh and my yarn and knitting a new piece for my half size dress form. The form is usually just naked (are you naked if you have no head and are inanimate?), but Holli is taking my Grading series, and mentioned a different shaping method she uses and graciously gave me a pattern to try it out. So I’ve got Soy yarn from Bellatrista and a different Mondo Fil yarn to work up Eventide. Knitting for a 19″ chest is a great diversion—very fast results!
Finally, a non-knitting diversion, but knitting related. Please read this blog post on The Funky Little Chair. Cynthia is great and I’ve enjoyed watching her get her business going. She writes well and with heart. I sent a copy of YNotKnit to her son Ian this week so he can decide if he wants to learn to knit. I love her photos on Instagram, and particularly loved that she made her boys carry the tiny sofa home.
I hope we all feel a little diverted! It has been a very long week.
