I was blocking a swatch done in the round yesterday and realized that I had a good tool that anyone could make. This will allow you to block a sleeve without a crease, easily block a shoulder seam, get around a neckline, or block a side seam.
Materials:
Wool fabric, preferably fairly thick. Use an old blanket or cut up an old coat. No blends if you like to use your steam iron.
Yarn to tie your roll together.
How to do it:
Cut several pieces of fabric, of slightly varying lengths, or a long piece and create your roll. Don’t make it too wide because you will be trying to shove it into sleeves. Once it is a width that you like–consider making it slightly wider at one end by wrapping it around a smaller piece–take a long length of yarn and tie it around at intervals to keep the shape. Block your blocking tool to help it remember its shape.
I made mine years ago. Like 20. I have never had it come undone. I am always thinking I should have made it wider, but it always works out that it is a good width. I should have made two.
