Yarn Mojo
For purposes of this post yarn mojo will mean:
” yarn charm or spell” or
“the moment when our yarn stash becomes purposeful, powerful, and positive”. Yeah!
Stuff vs. Yarn
I’m at a small gathering of fellow fiber professionals this weekend. The weekend hasn’t even started but as we are getting settled in we started talking about “stuff” we own. How much, how we store it, are we tidy and organized, or something else. We talked about getting rid of stuff, but I don’t think we were ever talking about getting rid of yarn/fiber. The reason to get rid of other stuff is to make sure that there is room and space for that which matters. It may involved getting rid of even yarn/fiber that doesn’t fit our yarn mojo anymore.
Did you know that it is okay to have moved on? To decide that you that you don’t want to ever knit with cashmere again? That super bulky yarn is satisfying to knit but will just never work for you as a wearable item? That you hate [you name it] and you don’t think you will ever get past it? That what seemed like a treasure just isn’t. That your love affair with [you name it] is over?
Turn that Yarn Mojo Around
We all find ourselves looking at stuff that it was so easy to respond to in the moment and then it is living with you—even if the moment may have passed. Sadly for many of us, the speed with which we undertook the acquisition then needs to be balanced by holding on to the item. Or, we don’t know what its purpose is so we hold on to it without getting any message from the fact that it seemingly has no purpose for us.
Of course it may seem wasteful that we don’t want something perfectly good (anyone remember being told to finish our meals because children were starving other places? I would have been willing to ship!), but what if it was treasure to someone else? There are many possibilities for moving things out that are no longer meaningful to you in ways which can benefit others—and perhaps recoup some of the original cost–and that will have the effect of opening up opportunities to welcome things that will suit you better.
While waiting for Bust Your $tash with Jill Wolcott Knits® to Start on February 15, try moving your yarn (or whatever you are wanting to bust) around. That seems to infuse different energy into it which might tell you what your feelings about it are.
