Last week Pantone announced the Color of the Year for 2014. In case you missed it, it is Radiant Orchid. My very smart assistant Wendy asked me what you do when you don’t like that color. That seemed like a really good question, and I think I have an answer.
Pantone’s Color Board produces a palette, which is used by trend services and design companies. But not everyone is going to use the palette as it is presented. So since Radiant Orchid is the Color of the Year, and let’s pretend that everyone will use it, the trick is to look past RO and see what is being offered in each brand’s palette. Each company has to have a palette that communicates their concepts and that will make everything look attractive on the selling floor or wherever their product exists.
In the first image I found, the RO becomes a background to stainless, black, and a variety of orange and golden colors.
The next, more of a concept board, shows RO with a variety of supporting colors. Notice the neutrals and other bold shades that make up the images. RO shows up as an accent, and as a core color.
The final image, another interior, is filled with neutrals and light, creating a beautiful balance to the RO. But the neutrals and blues are really lovely!
So look past the color you might not immediately respond to and see who else came to the party. You will probably find like-minded colors.
If you are like me and want to wear things past their current season, just choose from colors that go with what is already in your wardrobe. That color of the year will be so “last year” in 2015!
