I was hoping that along with the release of Seattle today that I would get the in-depth report posted too, but it isn’t going to be finished. With a 92 page pattern, I think it is more than understandable that it would take a day or two just to write up the Report! Look for the in-depth look, the Seattle Barre Report, early next week. By mid-August we will be offering kits as a joint adventure with UnwindYarn.com. Details and prices will be available next week. Colinton Australia Lace is the yarn used in Seattle and Bellevue Shrug. This is a unique mohair with lovely drape–and incredibly good yardage!
Because these are ballet sweaters (only better!), I chose to name the pieces I designed after three U.S. cities with well-respected ballet companies that also have ballet schools. Originally Seattle was called Kiev (and this had a Russian Ballet framework), but when unrest broke out between Russia and Ukraine we got a little queasy about the name and the associations people might have. Now Seattle, this ballet-style cardigan is a nice reflection of the Pacific Northwest: fairly simple and straight-forward, but with incredible beauty. The other ballet cardigan that is available is this. There is a third version that isn’t currently available.
The back of Seattle is completely done in lace and it was a challenge to get five sizes to work with a 37-stitch repeat. This is real lace knitting with patterning on every row. Once that is done the lace makes an early appearance as a peplum on the fronts, and all the subsequent shaping is done in stockinette. The sleeves feature a triple repeat of the lace at the beginning which creates a lovely scallop over the hand. After working the balance of the sleeve in stockinette a final repeat of the lace on the top of the sleeve cap completes the design.
Seattle is a perfect antidote to those athletic-wear outfits that provide so much comfort, but not nearly enough fashion. Tie this piece over anything and it is going to take it from ordinary to extraordinary. The classic silhouette will have you wearing this whenever you can and it is equally wearable over yoga pants or a fancy dress.
