Ninth Ward Cosy
Ninth Ward cosy is perfect for adding to a summer dress or tee to turn a work-day outfit into something a little more, but easy. I find knitting Tilting Ladders very satisfying — and there are instructions for working the cables with a needle or without.
I love popping a cosy over my shoulders for protection from air conditioning or breezes. More stable than a shawl, a cosy gives different coverage than a cowl. Pairing Ninth Ward Cosy with the French Quarter Tank will create a different kind of sweater-set, or give extra coverage to things you already have.
Why Ninth Ward
I named the French Quarter Tank for New Orleans. 2020 has taught us that we need to look beyond the obvious and familiar. I remember being in New Orleans and finding a sense of relief walking into the Ninth Ward. It was just slightly away from the tourist-facing French Quarter; not so familiar, but with things I love. Good Jazz (we saw Ellis Marsalis (who died from COVID-related pneumonia in 2020), Marcus Roberts, Delfaeyo Marsalis), food, drinks, and old cottages. That 2001 trip to New Orleans was weird; New Orleans isn’t really our kind of place, but it has its charms (I would say that they mostly evaded us at the time). Mitch was hot, everyone seemed to drink too much, and the food seemed overwhelmingly spicy.
I was subbing for a semester at the Academy of Art and I had to get home to do prep for the class. I needed to paint samples, so I set my Monday alarm to go off early. My plan was to spend the day working on them and be ready for the whole semester. I turned on NPR and soon leaned of the 9/11 attacks. Mitch was stuck in New Orleans; his conference was cancelled, but there were no flights, no rental cars. Eventually he moved back to the French Quarter because being at a convention hotel was too enervating.
And then there was Katrina and New Orleans and the surrounding area was devastated.
What We Take Away
I bought mugs at a photographer’s gallery on our last day together in New Orleans. Clearly they are well worn. I think they sum up our relationship nicely. I flew home on September 10 and Mitch stayed to give a speech. On my way to the airport I was telling the cab driver how difficult it was to be where people smoked so much. He couldn’t believe that smoking could be banned in bars and restaurants. Even though he smoked, he was completely in favor of it. Our worlds were clearly very different, but we were interested in the other’s.
