Description

Southeast Light

Named for a lighthouse on Block Island, Southeast Light is a beacon for doing stranded knitting, in small doses.  I’ve taken two stitch patterns from AlterKnits and combined them into my favorite pillbox-style hat.  This pattern is available as a single-pattern download here or as a kit through North Light Fibers.  Southeast Light is jointly produced with North Light Fibers.
The  Crown Finale joins the crown visibly, in quadrants.  Written instructions and a diagram will get you through, then finish with an embellished Crown Knot.
You will love the luxury of Water Street (3-ply) Handcrafted Artisanal Yarns 100% Made in USA, from North Light Fibers, 40% Cashmere, 60% Super Fine Merino, 2 oz (57g)/ 165 yds [151m]. WPI  15

XS uses Marigold as C1 and Enchanted Forest as C2 and a total of 1.3 oz (37g) / 104 yds (95 m)
S uses Enchanted Forest as C1 and Marigold as C2 and a total of 1.6 oz (46g) / 133 yds (122 m)
M uses Enchanted Forest as C1 and Orchid Bouquet as C2 and a total of 1.9 oz (54g) / 156 yds  (143 m)
Knit this as shown on the models (size S and M), or switch the dominant color for a major visual difference as in the XS.

What’s In the Pattern

The pattern has both written instructions and Action charts to guide you through the color work.  Check the Road Map Schematics to stay on track. Scales, the pattern used in the crown, is presented without the shaping for ease of use in swatching.  There is the usual guidance given in each section to lead the way.
Shaping charts are provided for each size as well as written instructions in a total of 15 pages with multiple Action charts and two diagrams for the Crown Finale.
In my color Action charts I indicate how many stitches to knit when there are 3 or more consecutive stitches of one color.  I find it easier than counting boxes, but unnecessary for fewer than 3 stitches. Written instructions are given for any knitter who doesn’t like charts.
The listed techniques are included in the Southeast Light instructions; other techniques are linked to my techniques database for easy access.
