Jill Wolcott Knits® Sizing Tables / Charts / Guidelines
The body measurements and sizing guidelines — or sizing charts or sizing tables — I developed to use to build my patterns. Ease is added to the measurements in the sizing chart to achieve the desired “look”, feel and wearability of each garment. Jill Wolcott Knits® maintains consistency between sizes to the extent stitch patterns allow. My sizing tables / charts / guidelines are based upon years of experience in the clothing industry, my observations of actual bodies, and done with an eye to achieving great fit.
Sizing tables are not perfect and sny garment developed from sizing tables / charts / guideline, not from individual measurements, will need to be adjusted for a more perfect fit for you. You can achieve a more perfect fit by taking your measurements and selecting the size from the sizing chart most closely matching your size. When working towards fit, reality is the key to perfect fit. If you do not know your basic measurements, you cannot know what size will fit you.
Which Sizing Suits You
Choose your size based on your body measurements. My patterns will always be based on the above measurements. This is then your Jill Wolcott Knits® size; you should always refer to the pattern for finished measurements which will tell you how much design ease is in the garment.
I usually use the Alpha sizes because I like large stitch patterns and there is more room to accommodate them. They are averages — of averages! I am expanding to offer seven sizes instead of five moving forward.
I don’t have plus size patterns, but here are the measurements and sizing tables / charts / guidelines for them. The Plus size chart has an additional Alpha size called XLX which is a crossover between Missy and Lavish. Honestly, As much as I would like to, I don’t currently have time to do more sizes than I do. Please notice that even my accessories have three to five sizes!
Tables / Charts / Guidelines
This is not a comprehensive list of body measurements, but it is generally what is used for standard-size patterns. Some measurements are mostly for reference and are not actually used; I have expanded the measurements included to accommodate my Grading classes. If making custom-size garments there are considerably more measurements that might be used. Email us to let us know if you would be interested in learning more. Jill Wolcott Knits® Torso Croquis
The Croquis are offered to you as downloads as an aid in understanding where measurements are taken. The drawing used is an artistic representation and not an expectation — I do not look like that, and do not expect you to! Download them from here.
