Last February I had the good fortune to meet Betty Salpekar at the Visionary Authors Retreat in Friday Harbor. During the course of the retreat many of us make presentations about work that we are thinking about or involved in producing. Everyone’s work is interesting, but I am not a sock knitter so I don’t get all excited about them. I don’t follow sock knitting, so I really don’t know much about the players either. Betty is just a lovely and fun person, so I forgave her for the socks.
When Betty presented her work (this takes you to a photographer’s blog–it says it all) I was blown away. The construction is pretty awesome, but what really, really got me was that Betty had created a new construction paradigm (is that the right word), but then applied all the lovely design principles that make for the loveliest socks. Her work is just stunning. She is self-effacing and so is unlikely to tell you that herself, so I’m going to do it.
Pre-order her book here. Read this to understand what she’s done, and go back and look at those wonderful photos here. Yay Betty. It’s enough to make me want to knit a sock!
