There are a number of ways to create buttonholes in knitting. This technique focuses on how to close buttonhole that are worked across two rows of knitting.
Abbreviations:
BH = buttonhole
dbl-YO = double yarn over
k2tog = knit two stitches together
YO = yarn over
k2tog-b = knit two stitches together through the back loop
Pattern Specific Variations to Close Buttonhole
Sometimes, I include technique variations that are for specific patterns. I always include directions for specific techniques in the pattern itself, so be sure to also read any patterns you’re working on closely.

Note: For a larger buttonhole, do three wraps, then drop the middle wrap without working.
Knit to 1 stitch before the dbl-YO. K2tog the stitch and the first YO loop, k2tog-b the second YO loop and the next stitch.
