The hem stitch is used for hemming knits. It works for anything that needs a hem, and is particularly useful for sweater bodies and cuffs.
Abbreviations:
RS – right side
CO – cast on
How to work the hem stitch
Beginning: Fold hem up. Anchor yarn or use yarn tail.
Setup: Bring threaded tapestry needle to RS of top piece, just inside the CO edge.
Repeat: *Bring yarn over edge of top piece. Go up under a stitch bump on the bottom piece, with the needle facing toward the top piece. Bring needle through the top piece to RS directly above the stitch bump of bottom piece. Rep from * to end.
Finishing: Pull stitches snug to bring top of piece edge to stitch bumps. Weave in ends.
