Picking Up Wrapped Stitches

Wrapped stitches are created when you wrap your working yarn around a live stitch. They’re often used in short row shaping. Once the stitch is wrapped, you often need to pick and work the wrap on a following row.

In Jill Wolcott Knits® patterns, I often use the term “pull up” in place of “pick up” as I think the term is clearer, because you’re pulling up the thread to work it.

Pull up / Pick Up Wrap – General

Abbreviation: PU wrap
On the RS of knitting, going underneath both wraps at base of next stitch with tip of right needle, lift wraps onto the left needle and knit (or purl) them together with stitch. When working from the WS, the wrap is picked up from the RS of the knitting (pushing it to the back).

Pull up / Pick Up 2 Wraps – General

Abbreviation: PU2 wraps
On the RS of knitting, going underneath both wraps at base of next stitch with tip of right needle, lift wraps onto the left needle and knit (or purl) them together with stitch.

Pull up / Pick Up Wrap – Knit

Abbreviation: K1-PU wrap
Phrasing One
Knit to a wrapped stitch on the left needle. Pick up wrap from the RS by putting right needle underneath the wrap on the RS and lifting the wrap onto the left needle, then knitting the wrap together with the stitch which it wrapped.

Phrasing Two
On the RS, put tip of right needle underneath wrap at base then into stitch. Knit wrap together with stitch, bringing needle out underneath wrap as you complete the stitch.

Abbreviation: K1-PU2 wraps
On the RS, put tip of right needle underneath both wraps at base of next stitch with tip of right needle, lift wraps onto the left needle and knit them together with stitch.

Pull up / Pick Up Wrap – Purl

Abbreviation: P1-PU wrap
Method One
Purl to a wrapped stitch on the left needle. Pick up wrap from the RS by putting right needle underneath the wrap on the RS and lifting the wrap onto the left needle, then purling the wrap together with the stitch which it wrapped.

Method Two
With tip of right needle and from the RS of knitting, go underneath wrap at base of stitch and lift wrap onto left needle and purl it together with stitch.

Method Three
This method works the new stitch without putting the wrap onto the left needle. It takes a little practice. With tip of right needle and from the RS of knitting, go underneath wrap at base of next stitch and into stitch on needle then purl the stitch, bringing new stitch out under wrap.
