Put the outside loop of the stitch on the edge of the row in line with your needle onto the left needle to work a p2tog or k2tog.
In Jill Wolcott Knits® patterns, I often use the term “pull up” in place of “pick up” as I think the term is clearer, because you’re pulling up the thread to work it.

PU Edge Loop from CO Variation for Medellín
Pick up the corresponding edge loop from cast on loops onto left needle. The WY helps you see where to pick up–the loops just adjacent to the WY.
