Three Computers, No Joy

I have three computers running in my office right now. This is not the post I planned to write on Thursday, but sometimes you just have to go with what you’ve got.

It is my fear this is all related to 32-bit and 64-bit systems. No idea what that actually means, but I do know that because I cannot run my older versions of Creative Suite using a 64-bit system that I haven’t upgraded the OS on my beautiful 27″ desktop in a while.

Computer 1

My desktop. Always my favorite. Mitch would like me to not run so many programs at one (those are not all open), but I usually have at least a half dozen things going.

As computers sometimes do, while we were vacationing at the Oregon coast, I couldn’t operate a valuable app on my traveling laptop. The help desk for the App told me my operating system was too old. Same thing on that computer, but I was using an even older version of the Creative Suite, and decided to bite the bullet and upgrade so I could at least do social media. Gone are all the programs I used to use but had become outdated, but the web works great!

Computer 2

My 15″ laptop (traveling laptop)

After bitching at Mitch about my non-functioning desktop, he suggested we try using an old computer for my old version CS. So now I’m working on my laptop, trying to use my desktop, and have pulled my old 17-inch laptop off the top shelf and am recharging that to see if it will work with the old CS.

Computer 3

The 17″ laptop. No idea what OS it operates on. It is a hefty beast (but an enviable screen size).

The alternative, of course, is to give in to Adobe and buy the CS in the cloud for the not inconsiderable $50/month.

Computers! I did just notice that Dropbox was backing up my entire system, just as I’m working. Maybe that is slowing things down! When it says backing up 18,000+ files, it is bound to slow things down. It will at least give me a reprieve until the Fall on upgrading.

I think I may have spent more time looking at my computers in various stages of stasis than actually getting work done this week. I did get a pile of stuff on my desk sorted out.

Nothing to do with Computers!

Funny thing, completely unrelated to computers which made me laugh today. Wednesday I snagged a project I had wet-blocked earlier from our bathroom on my way downstairs to make dinner and knit. Apparently I knocked a marker loose and I’m guessing it fell on the floor. Imagine my surprise as I looked down in the shower the next morning (it is even with the floor) and there was the marker! It is a flat copper-colored marker so I think one of us must have stepped on it and walked it into the shower without noticing.

Pattern-Specific Calculators: Free Webinar

Lyon Cowl in Elemental Affects Civility with a box of other yarn possibilities
That is Lyon Cowl in the foreground. Using my pattern-specific calculator, owners of this pattern can make Lyon Cowl in any size, any gauge. I’m going to do a free webinar on Zoom, which has now been rescheduled to June 30, 11:30 am.

The pattern-specific calculators in Positano and Lyon will be explained, and I will walk you through the written patterns so you can learn about all the fabulousness of a Jill Wolcott Knits pattern! Do Today to Make Time: Free Webinar

Spring Kaikoura partially bound off
It is kind of nothing new, but planning will get you to your goals. I often do my planning fairly short terms, but I have tons of tricks for making sure I get to all the things.

I’m doing a webinar on Friday, June 11, at 11 am to share my tricks and tips for getting things done, while also finding time for what you want to do. I don’t have any startling revelations, but I do get ^&*# done! Since I am a rebel at heart, I have to work around my own worst instincts. I’ve read the books, watched the videos, listened to podcasts, taken workshops. I will distill what I have learned so you can save that time! Sign up here on Teachable.

Those stitch markers are amazing–I’m pretty sure they get out and have parties while we’re asleep. I knocked over my marker tin a few days ago, so I’ll probably still be finding them in ten years.

Fair warning on that Dropbox backup: Keep an eye on your folders and make sure it doesn’t SURPRISE! migrate all your files into the cloud, instead of just backing them up. Even though you never ever set it to do that. Probably in the middle of a deadline. Much to the befuddlement (with no apologies) of the Dropbox help desk. (Can you tell I’m still fuming about it?)

Yeah, it was totally Dropbox. I have now cleaned up my external storage so that I have a backup, Dropbox (backup and whatever else they have done), and copies of everything. No paranoia here!
